Here at Delap Wealth Advisory, we are always striving to help our clients feel powerful and knowledgeable when it comes to their finances. Often, we take for granted that everyone knows what a specific financial term means. One of our team members had an epiphany that “perhaps we shouldn’t assume everyone knows the terms we use.” It happened one afternoon when her son, who has autism, couldn’t find his favorite cup.
“Mom, where’s my cup?”
She responded with, “It’s on the counter.”
After a few moments of silence, her son said: “No, mom, I don’t want to know about numbers. I want to know where my cup is.”
It occurred to her that he thought she was talking about counting numbers, not the kitchen counter. A very smart child, she just assumed he knew what the counter was. There are a few terms we use in wealth management that are simple but can easily be confused if you aren’t using them every day like we are. Please enjoy this quick reference guide to take some of the confusion out of financial “lingo.”
